Chemical Detox and Spirituality-How Advertising Fools Us

Chemical Detox and Spirituality-How Advertising Fools Us

Photobucket

What has television told us about our "needs" and how is this affecting our health -and ultimately our spiritual well being? There is no doubt that television advertising along with radio and even billboards along the highway have plenty of information that they want to get across to us. Even a visit to the doctor not only has magazines filled with adds that tell us what medications to ask for, now many of them have television sets set to a channel filled with"health information". What are some of the strong messages we are being told? There are many products we are told we NEED in order to be healthy and even relaxed when in fact these products are breaking down our bodies and sick bodies rarely provide a good temple for healthy spiritual growth. Let's take a look at a few of the facts about some of these products being advertised.

How many of us have seen adds for various toothpastes that can"whiten and brighten our smiles. They even have kits now to help whiten teeth in seven to fourteen days. Without even delving in to what is in our tap water, bottled water is now being marketed to children with happy colors that spell out, "extra flouride added" to make parents think this is a good thing for their children's teeth and bones. Here are some facts about flouride. Flouride is a byproduct of the aluminum and fertilizer industries. It is a component of nerve gas, and it causes flourosis of the teeth which means chalky white patches that make your teeth brown and brittle. The flouride in drinking water and toothpaste causes damage to the central nervous system and may cause some cancers. Dr. William Hirzy, with the national Federation of Federal Employees (neuro toxic Division) states, "studies show a causal link between flouride/flouridation and cancer, genetic damage, neurological impairment and bone pathology. Of particular concern are recent epidemiology studies linking flouride exposures to lower I.Q. in children."

But white teeth are not the only thing we as Americans have been told we need to have shiny and new! Clothing and linens are also advertised in every way as needing to be bright and white! Just watch daytime television any weekday and the detergent adds will overwhelm you. Go down the grocery store aisle and there are so many brands of laundry detergent it is blinding. Not to mention fabric softeners for both the washing machine and the dryer. The truth is our bodies are time-released chemical patches. Our skin absorbs the chemicals left on our clothes from washing them. Laundry detergents and softeners are filled with chemicals. Here is an experiment I learned from a friend who recovered from cancer by changing her diet along with everything else. Take one wash of clothing to a front load machine in a laundromat. Don't add anything but your clothes to the machine. Let it run it's course. Watch the door when the machine spins. You will see soap. That soap will be there even though we all think our washers and dryers have gotten it all out! It is there and our skin is absorbing those chemicals.

Although the list could go on to include things like hair dye to nitrates in pork products and even the danger of plastic and plastic diapers we will look at one more example and then summarize how this topic affects us spiritually. I would like to take a quick look at some common foods that most the United States uses everyday and explain what is hazardous to our health as a result of eating them. To start with, remember the "Happy Cows" we see on TV in California? Well the truth is those cows in California are raised in factory farms just like any other cows. When a lawsuit was brought against the farming industry by PETA about these adds it was determined that since they are a part of the government agencies of California these factory farms were exempt from prosecution for "lying to the public about the "Happy Cows". (See GoVegan.com) Cow's milk and anything made from it is filled with bovine growth hormone (which causes young girls to develop years before they should among a list of other things). Antibiotics used excessively in livestock which are causing us to become immune to antibiotics that used to kill simple bacteria and consequently are giving rise to super-bugs that are anti-biotic resistant. Soy, most of which has been genetically enhanced and contains far to much protein than it should is causing allergies. Peanut mold found in the shells of peanuts clings to the nut and is then used in peanut butter among other products is a strong allergen. Wheat gluten which makes the blood sticky and is being found to not only cause intestinal issues but now may be responsible for the overwhelming amount of fibromyalgia that has recently developed and contributes to heart and heart related disorders. Wheat gluten is in almost every bred and pasta product on the market and is also found in vegetarian burgers. Caffeine, and sugar products which most of us know is unhealthy causing stress on liver, kidney and adrenal glands.

So, how do these things affect us spiritually. We all know that a healthy body helps create a healthy mind. We are learning from teachers such as Abraham-Hicks, Neale Walsh, the Secret and the yogis have been saying it for thousand and thousands of years that we must get control of our thoughts..we must move them in a positive direction. When you body is reacting to chemicals and preservatives that do not belong in it there are symptoms. some of these include:

being easily frustrated, inability to focus, short attention span, sudden angry outbursts, mood swings, unable to sit still, constant nasal congestion, migraines, sleep disorders, nightmares, fatigue, stomach aches ringing in the ears (tinnitus), not to mention the bigger diseases like cancer, heart attacks and so on.

How do we get our bodies still and our mind's quiet when all this is going on because of what we are taking into them through food as well as our water and other ways chemicals can be ingested? One can work form the inside out or from the outside in...In other words, keep doing your spiritual practices and at the same time start working on your diet. Become a label reader. Look for hidden chemicals in food. If it says "high fructose corn syrup" it is sugar. Natural flavorings is also a way to disguise MSG and a load of other preservatives. Then slowly move away from heavy laundry detergents. I use white vinegar instead of laundry soaps. It is wonderful and leaves clothes looking fantastic. In no time at all your body starts to cooperate better in meditation, aches and pains you thought were age begin to clear up and a new sort of joy creeps into your life. This is spiritual living in action..or as the yogis might say..a branch of karma yoga.

Beyond the Beyond

Beyond the Beyond

Photobucket

Waking up not quite right
choosing to create languid pools
of blue crystal clear water in my mind
cool languid waves breaking softly
inside the shores of my emotions
calming waters to sit beside and reflect
in the depths of my soul a river runs
quiet and constant
in the shade of deep green tropical plants
it is there I go to find the source of creation
in that river beyond the beyond
all that is needed for creation lies in the deep river
I lean over the river and cup my hands
splashing water on my face
I pull out of the river Here and Nowness
I create calm and peace
then I return to the world of flesh and bone
renewed and right once again

Sanskrit, Chakras,Breathing and Some Simple Meditation Guides

Sanskrit, Chakras,Breathing and Some Simple Meditation Guides

As I had many inquiries about the article on Sanskrit and the meanings of some Sanskrit symbols I am following some of those questions up with a little bit about how the sounds of certain Sanskrit letters )and a few simple mantras affect those energy cycles in the body that we all know as chakras.

Let me start by saying that there are many energy centers in the body and that a chakra is like a super intersection of highways where many of these energy systems just so happen to cross. Chinese systems are aware of this and treat smaller intersections with acupuncture and other methods. In the yogic systems these smaller intersections are known as nadis.

The 7 major chakras that have been focused on so much n the west are:

Sahasrara-the crown chakra which gives one access to the higher self
Ajna-third eye which has to do with greater seein into higher planes and greater iner wisdom
Vishuddha-the throat chakra which has to do with speaking out, having your Truths be heard
Anahata-the heart chakra..a move of energy into this energy center allows the individual to start experiencing compassion, divine Love and to see things on a higher level
Manipura-third chakra which is responsible for the drive for power
Svadhisthana-the second chakra located approximately below or around the pubic bone responsible for sex and procreation and creation in general
Muladhara-the root chakra. responsible for survival

This is a rough outline as each chakra is responsible for so much more than just these basic elements. However, this is a good outline of what these super highways do and how they are activated when prana, chi, the Holy spirit, or Shakti begins to travel up the spine and activate them. Most the world is living in the first three chakras. In this special day and age we live in it seems more and more people are awakening to higher levels of consciousness, particularly in the heart and in compassion.

If you are working with breath and meditation in a yogic practice you will find that certain sounds are related to each chakra (and there are certain colors associated with them too, but for the purposes of this article we will stick with the basics outline about what the chakras are ..I recommend that you work with a teacher if you are going to start to work with sound and color in relation to chakra work.) However, if you do use the sound while focusing on a certain chakra always remember to connect them with a breathing exercise. In yoga it is most useful to use two to one ration breathing according to your capacity. In other words, if you inhale for 2 counts you should exhale for 4. When you can breath more deeply you may increase that from an inhalation of 3 counts to an exhalation of six and so forth.

There are many great breathing exercises in yoga and I will cover that in future articles. For now the main thing is to always keep the ratio two to one and to always inhale AND exhale through the nostrils.

Also it is most useful to ALWAYS breath only through the diaphragm. Diaphragmatic breathing for yoga or for anytime occurs when the diaphragm muscle contracts. It then pulls the bottom of the lungs downward, causing them to fill, while the ribs flare outward to the sides. The chest and abdominal muscles are not used in diaphragmatic breathing. When done correctly the chest should not rise and fall at all. Diaphragmatic breathing is extremely relaxing to the autonomic nervous system . The shoulders should always be relaxed and never rise and fall. One good way to practice this is to lie on one's back with a medium size bag of rice on the diaphragm. practice moving the bag of rice without moving anything else while using the diaphragm to breath in and out!

If you would like to practice using a mantra there are two that I would recommend:

So-ham..(translated means I am) pronounced more like ...so-ha-um when combined with the breathing The so should occur on the in-breath and the ha-um on the out breath smoothly.

Secondly of course one may choose to use the mantra
Aum (known as Om..but pronounced as it is spelled more or less...).In the case of Aum the in -breath is silent and the out-breath carries all three parts of the the mantra. The mmmm should actually vibrate gently on the lips and a fourth "syllable " should end in silence.

You may start these mantras by pronouncing them out loud for awhile. Eventually you may find yourself repeating them inside your mind. This is still a form of pronouncing them verbally..but it is moving inward. Over time they may become more silent and even become a vibration that even leads to silence. And yet the mantra will still be there like a rhythm. This comes in time after a lot of daily practice.

Do not become frustrated with yourself or your mind when your mind wanders off. IT WILL WANDER OFF. Try and catch it sooner and sooner each time it wanders off with no judgment towards yourself and simply restart the mantra and stay with it.

This topic is very complicated. There is much more to it than has been presented here. However this is a start to understanding a little about Chakras and expanding on how Sanskrit fits into them and the very beginnings of meditation work in the Himalayan Yogic traditions.

Sound
--------------------------------
LAM for the root chakra
VAM for the second chakra
RAM for the third chakra
YAM for the fourth (heart) chakra
HAM for the fifth (throat) chakra
AUM for the sixth (third eye)
AH for the seventh (crown) chakra

Sanskrit: How Useful is It?

Photobucket

Sanskrit is a mystical language. So many people wish to learn more about it despite the fact it is classified by academics as a "dead language" such as Latin. Many people do not realize that Sanksrit was eventually affected by Latin during it's later evolution. The Sanskrit script, known as, devanagari script, is still used for the Hindi language. I spent many semesters taking Sanskrit as both a graduate student and as an undergraduate. In all honesty, this language is so difficult I still can not put a sentence together to do this day. Of course, what you do not use, you lose and I have not used Sanskrit for anything other than spiritual practice in years.

Sanskrit uses the feminine, the masculine and the neuter forms as opposed to a language such as Spanish where there are only two choices of pronoun for all objects..masculine and feminine. Furthermore, declensions occur in nominative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, instrumental, locative and the vocative. If that isn't enough one must deal with a phenomenon called sandhi. If you have ever looked at long Sanskrit documents you may have noticed that the script is all connected to a bar across the top. All the figures seem to run together. What happens is that after one has gone through all the declensions and grammar to determine the right form of the word one wants to use ..one then must look at the next word and depending on the next letter or meaning of that word it may change everything about what the first word's rules are..and usually does. If that seems complicated..it is because it IS!

A swami who thought I was very silly for studying Sanskrit in college once told me that I should not waste my time doing so. I was told that learning Sanskrit would not help me if I needed to find a bathroom in India. This is true. However, although I have forgotten most of what I learned in college I am glad I took the time to learn about it and to learn a bit about how it worked. (The language is also so revered in India that if you happen to be a Sanskrit student and also happen to be in India, many families wil take you in and offer you room and board so you may further your studies! So it may put a roof over your head.)

What I learned in the oral tradition of the Himalayan masters may be the reason that people are so interested in knowing Sanskrit in this day and age. According to tradition the way the rishis, the great meditators in the Himalayan mountains of India and Tibet established the actual symbols of the Sanskrit alphabet was amazing. They would set up drums of different shapes and sizes. Then, they would cover the top of the instrument in sand. The instrument would be stuck to produce the sound that the rishis wanted. the vibrations from the instrument would then move the sand into a particular pattern..that pattern would be repeated every time the sand would be placed on the instrument and the same tone struck. The pattern of the sound would be recorded.

So, Sanskrit is truly the language of sound. Each figure in the devanagari alphabet is formed from this process that was carried out by the sages thousand and thousands of years ago. So when we use Sanskrit prayers are they more effective than a prayer in Latin or English. I believe that prayer is about intent of the heart personally. I believe that our intentions and our heart felt knowing is more important than what language we use to pray or communicate in. However, since Sanskrit has such deeps roots in sound (and sound and breath are so deeply connected to life), I believe that their is a great usefulness in using Sanskrit in meditation and for calming the mind. It is certainly something one should take some time to study about and learn a little history about, if interested, on the spiritual path.

Liquid Gold Awakening

Liquid Gold Awakening

Photobucket

My eyes open slowly
gray gives way first to liquid gold sunlight
then the greens of the trees filter through
as unconsciousness peels away
I emerge into the realization
I have the gift of another day
I feel my own breath expand
and I expand with it
and the colors and flavors and smells
of the earth and kitchen and kitty litter
all whirl around throughout my day
once in awhile I pause
and realize I am on sacred ground
in sacred time
and this amazing joyous life I call mine
is simply the Divine
in one of it's disguises
and then I return to chopping vegetables
and taking the dogs for a run

Getting Down To Business Spiritually-Detoxing to Move Upward

Photobucket

I am going to use a yogic model from the Himalayan tradition for this discourse as a base to extrapolate from simply because that is my background. But you can change the words and it certainly remove the Sanskrit and it applies to any tradition.

Physical - Annamaya kosha ..(here just think about the body..the most dense energy level of our being)
Energy - Pranamaya kosha (the subtler forms.breath, kundalini)
Mental - Manamaya kosha (our thoughts..)
Wisdom - Vijnanamaya kosha (ability to discern)
Bliss - Anandamaya kosha see below)
Self - Atman

*Anna means food. All of the physical aspects of life come and go, and are consumed by another aspect of external reality. Thus, the outermost of the koshas is called the sheath of food, or Annamaya kosha.

*Prana means energy.

*Mana means mind. It is the level of processing thoughts and emotions. It is in direct control of the operation, through the prana, chi, kundalini, breath (all the same) of the physical body and senses.

*Vijnana means knowing. It is the sheath of wisdom that is underneath the processing, thinking aspect of mind. It knows, decides, judges, and discriminates between this and that, between useful and not useful.

*Ananda means bliss. It is simply being, resting in bliss called ananda.

*Atman is the Self, the eternal center of consciousness, which was never born and never dies.

What I want to focus on in this discourse is first the physical sheath..the body..and then the mental sheath, the mind. It seems that a lot of folks who are wonderful loving spiritual people want to go straight to enlightenment and leave these two areas behind. Perhaps it is our western religious roots that tell us the body is not important in spiritual matters and that we must be strong and "pull ourselves up by the bootstraps". The Protestant ethic has delivered that message to us for generations. However, the bottom line is that enlightenment has laws, and being in a body has laws..spiritual laws that if we do not acknowledge will stop us or cause us stagnation and possible pain if ignored.

The physical sheath, our body must be cleared out in order for kundalini to rise and not run into blocks. In other words, if you are eating foods filled with preservatives, gluten, white flour products, making the blood sticky, the intestines caked up and causing the body to be unable to clear itself of the same poisons over and over again...you will develop symptoms. These will include everything from cancer to migraines to fibromyalgia and a whole list of common symptoms in between. If you are smoking and drinking caffeine..your blood pressure is at risk and you are taxing the liver and kidneys and your breathing will not be what it needs to be when you work on your spiritual practices.

So, what happens when you have a body that is filled with sticky blood, an overtaxed lymph system, reduced life force from trying to process preservatives and pesticides..and is already sluggish..and you are working on a spiritual practice and you begin to move the kundalini up the spine? A lot of people are calling the pain and the dis-eases that are coming with this combination ascension symptoms. Your physical sheath is simply not prepared and open for the more subtle energy to flow. The heavier fluids cannot flow..the hormones and even the blood can barely flow through the quagmire of the average American diet..how can subtle energy move through without it being misdirected and causing complications and problems?

The solutions of course are in detoxifying the body...getting rid of the meat, the dairy, and yes..the gluten which creates sticky blood....drinking a lot of water and eating the kind of diet that will allow the body to become lighter..then the LIGHT energy can flow.

Another area that a lot of us seem to want to skip over is the mind . I am a great believer in cognitive behavioral therapy....i.e. I do not think it is terribly useful to be a Freudian and sit on a couch and re-examine every hurt you ever went through in your lifetime and feel sorry for yourself. However, many of us wish to skip dealing with abuses and trauma altogether. We want to just think good thoughts and ignore the hungry dogs in the basement. That is not useful either. There are issues in most of our lives that we must look at. Sometimes a professional is useful for this. I deeply do not believe anyone should become a professional patient or allow a therapist to tell you what you are feeling. This work takes enormous self honesty and the ability to be fearless..to go through our pain . If we try to go around it or over or under it it will find us in our karma until we deal with it..we are doomed to repeat the lesson. Once we have gone through our issues, we are then free from them. many of us are using spirituality as an avoidance technique. In the end this is useless. Again..As we go into spiritual practice and our kundalini begins to rise...what is not cleared out in the mind field will be there to cause symptoms of dis-ease. Repressed anger notoriously causes cancer, fear is a huge block to Love and to growth, and I cannot count how many people I have met through Myspace who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks..which can be overcome.. the list goes on. (I would recommend for those of you who are friends of Michael Skowronski to look at some of his blogs..they are very useful.) Meditation and journal writing will help in the area of clearing our mental and emotional issues..for lots of us some counseling is usually necessary in the world the way it is today. Just be careful not to get stuck there either!

When these two areas , the physical and the mental and emotional sheaths or levels are working more smoothly our spiritual practices will be more fruitful. We must quit putting off dealing with getting our bodies detoxed from unhealthy food because it is a habit or because we like the way Fritos taste. If we really wish to pursue enlightenment, our path, whatever that might be: Reiki Healer, yoga, Prayer Warrior, Lightworker, Christian, ..the list can go on..that which leads us to Oneness with the Light and Love..then we must detox our bodies of the things that are blocking the flow of chi, prana, kundalini..etc.

We must go fearlessly into examining our inner world..our thoughts and emotions to clear away the debris of the past so that we are loosed from negative patterns and build those positive thoughts and emotions that we have all become aware of thanks to wonderful teachings like, "The Secret" and Conversations with God" among many others.

I am working on all this just like everyone else! I definitely make no claims to have become any more enlightened than so many of the wonderful spiritual people I have met. I do think that we must remember that we it is not an option to tend to these two levels of our being as the whole system is connected. As we have chosen to incarnat, our soul and prana, chi, kundalini must work with the various levels of this body and even once we drop this body the patterns we create in the mind field will continue to affect our souls, atman, call it what you will. It is all just heavier and lighter forms of the same energy patterns.
